Had an old Salton before-It did an OK job, was noisey AND messy, but had a preset so you could simply press a button and get the same amount of gound coffee every time without having to use a measure The Capresso 565 does a great job for the money, however, it could use a preset for the timer.
The convenience of always having fresh ground coffee on hand makes it well worth the money. Lots of different settings, although I just use one drip setting and grind when I need it. The build quality could be a little better, but at this price I think its really quite good. I have been using this unit for about six months now and I am impressed with the quality. I almost spent roughly double on a Kitchenaid, but frankly this seems to do the job just fine.
If you clean it the way Capresso says to, its really hard and messy. I went down to Peet's and bought fresh beans - same thing. The price was very good and for the most part the reviews indicated it made excellent espresso but there were issues cleaning it as the grinding chamber retains some coffee.
But turning the grind all the way down to (supposedly) Turkish coffee level, I still could not get good crema in my shots and they were thin and relatively flavorless. Tried different levels of fill and pressures of tamping - still no joy. At first I thought it was my beans because the results looked like what I get when the beans aren't fresh enough.
When my trusty Gaggia grinder's motor burned out I needed a grinder fast and ordered this one. I've been making espresso at home for the last 5 years or so and everyone things the drink I make is excellent. Returned it.PS - it does do fine for drip or french press coffee and is a huge step up from cheap high speed grinders.
I decided the people complaining about the cleaning were whiners and ordered. They were right. I tried running a couple teaspoons of beans through then discarding what came out, and that worked OK but its an extra step I didn't want.My biggest issue though is its inability to grind beans fine enough to make good espresso.
IT IS ALSO A DYNAMITE SPICE GRINDER. THIS IS A CONICAL BURR GRINDER, WHICH HAS SEVERAL SETTINGS SO YOU CAN ADJUST THE FINENESS OF THE COFFEE TO SUIT THE TYPE YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE.
The finest grind is unable to produce any more than a 9 second shot in my Gaggia Baby; take info consideration I roast my own beans and any matter of tamping from none to ~50lbs.Overall: Great for drip coffee, horrible for any quality espresso machine. If you have a decent espresso machine: gaggia, silivia, etc. this is NOT the machine for you.
